How Radiation Works in Subnautica 2

Early in Subnautica 2, the Aurora starship explodes after crashing, leaking radiation from its damaged drive core. This creates a large radioactive zone around the wreck that damages any player who enters without protection. Radiation is a hard barrier: you cannot explore the Aurora or the surrounding waters safely until you either craft a Radiation Suit or repair the drive core to stop the leak. This guide covers both options.

What Radiation Does to You

Without a Radiation Suit, entering the radioactive zone around the Aurora causes continuous damage that increases the longer you stay. The damage bypasses normal armor and can kill you within minutes. The radiation zone extends several hundred meters from the wreck and is visible as a shimmering, discolored area in the water. You will also receive a PDA warning when you enter the zone.

Radiation does not affect vehicles the same way; a Seamoth or Prawn Suit provides some protection, but you still need the suit when you exit the vehicle to explore the Aurora interior.

Where to Find the Radiation Suit Blueprint

The Radiation Suit blueprint is unlocked early in the game. The most reliable way to get it is:

• Lifepod radio signals: Follow the radio missions early in the game. One of the early signals or story events leads you to a location or wreck that unlocks the Radiation Suit blueprint.
• Wrecks near the safe shallows and kelp forest: Some shallow wrecks contain a databox with the Radiation Suit blueprint. Scan wrecks and look for the yellow databoxes inside.
• Aurora approach: The area around the Aurora has debris with databoxes, but you need the suit to approach safely, creating a chicken-and-egg problem. The blueprint is always obtainable from shallower sources before you need to go near the Aurora.

Once you find the databox and interact with it, the Radiation Suit blueprint unlocks in your fabricator's personal menu.

How to Craft the Radiation Suit

The Radiation Suit is crafted at the fabricator in your lifepod or base. It consists of multiple pieces that you must all equip for full protection:

Lead is smelted from Galena Outcrops found in the kelp forest and grassy plateaus. Fiber Mesh is crafted from Creepvine Samples. You must wear all three pieces simultaneously for full radiation protection; wearing only the body suit leaves you exposed.

Exploring the Aurora Safely

Once you have the full Radiation Suit, you can approach and enter the Aurora. Inside, you will find:

• Prawn Suit fragments and databoxes in the cargo bay.
• Cyclops Bridge fragments in the deeper sections of the wreck.
• The drive core room where you can repair the leak and permanently remove the radiation from the map.
• Story data and codes on PDAs scattered throughout the ship.

Bring a repair tool, a laser cutter (for sealed doors), a flashlight, and a propulsion cannon (to move debris). The Aurora interior is dark, maze-like, and partially flooded, so plan your route and watch your oxygen.

How to Fix the Aurora Drive Core

To permanently eliminate the radiation zone, repair the Aurora's drive core. Navigate to the drive core room deep inside the wreck and use your repair tool on the damaged core modules. Once all the damage points are repaired, the radiation leak stops and the radioactive zone dissipates over time. After this, you no longer need the Radiation Suit for that area, though it is still useful if you encounter other radiation sources.

Steps:

1. Equip the full Radiation Suit, repair tool, laser cutter, and flashlight.
2. Enter the Aurora through the breached hull on the port side.
3. Navigate through the corridors, using the laser cutter on sealed doors.
4. Reach the drive core room at the rear of the ship.
5. Repair all damaged core points with the repair tool.
6. Exit the ship; the radiation dissipates within a short time.
