Understanding the Infection
The Kharaa infection is a core story mechanic in Subnautica 2. After a certain point in the game, your character becomes infected with an alien bacterium that spreads through the planet's ecosystem. The infection progresses in stages and, if left untreated, eventually becomes lethal. Curing it is tied to the main story, so you cannot simply buy or craft a cure at the start. This guide explains how the infection works and how to cure it.
Infection Stages and Symptoms
The infection progresses through several visible stages. As it advances, you will notice physical changes on your character's hands and body, and the game displays infection warnings. The key stages are:
- Stage 1 (Early): Minor skin discoloration on hands. No gameplay effect yet.
- Stage 2 (Mid): More visible infection. Some creatures become more aggressive toward infected targets.
- Stage 3 (Late): Significant health and oxygen penalties. The Warper creature begins actively hunting you.
- Stage 4 (Critical): Severe debuffs. You must cure the infection soon or face death.
Check your infection status in your PDA or inventory screen. The game warns you as each stage advances.
How the Infection Spreads
The infection spreads through contact with infected creatures and environments. You cannot avoid becoming infected; it is part of the story progression. However, you can slow the advance by avoiding unnecessary contact with infected fauna and by progressing the story to unlock the cure. The Warper, an alien construct, specifically targets infected organisms and will teleport you out of your vehicle if your infection is advanced.
How to Find the Cure
The cure is tied to the main story questline. To unlock it, you must:
Step 1: Follow the radio signals and story markers to locate the alien research facilities.
Step 2: Explore the Disease Research Facility and the Primary Containment Facility in the deep biomes.
Step 3: Discover the source of Enzyme 42, the substance that neutralizes the Kharaa bacterium.
Step 4: Interact with the Sea Emperor Leviathan, which produces the cure enzyme as part of the story.
Step 5: Collect and use the cure to clear your infection and the planet's infection simultaneously.
You cannot skip these steps. The cure is a story reward, not a craftable item.
Surviving While Infected
While you work toward the cure, manage your infection symptoms:
- Carry extra health kits to offset the health penalties at later stages.
- Avoid the Warper by swimming in vehicles and curing as soon as the story allows.
- Keep your oxygen supply high; infection can reduce effective oxygen at depth.
- Do not panic. The infection advances slowly, and you have plenty of time to progress the story before it becomes critical.
What Happens After the Cure
Once you use the cure, your infection is permanently removed. All infection symptoms disappear, the Warper stops hunting you, and the planet's ecosystem begins to recover. The cure also unlocks the endgame content, allowing you to complete the story. There is no way to become reinfected after curing, so you can explore freely afterward.
