How to Reach the Deep Sea and Lava Zones in Subnautica 2

The Journey to the Deep

Reaching the deepest biomes in Subnautica 2 is the ultimate test of your survival preparation. The journey takes you from the safe shallows through the lost river, into the inactive lava zone, and finally to the active lava zone where the rarest resources and story content await. Each layer requires specific vehicle upgrades and planning. This guide walks you through the entire descent.

Depth Roadmap

Step 1: Reach the Lost River (500-900 m)

The lost river is the gateway to the deep zones. To find an entrance, look for the green briny water and massive skeletal remains that mark the lost river corridors. Multiple entrances exist, commonly found below the grand reef, the deep sparse reef, and the blood kelp zones.

Requirements:

• Seamoth with depth module MK3 (900 m) OR the Cyclops.
• High capacity oxygen tank and rebreather if swimming outside your vehicle.
• A repair tool for vehicle damage.
• Beacon to mark the entrance.

Watch for Ghost Leviathan juveniles in the lost river. They patrol the corridors and deal heavy damage.

Step 2: Enter the Inactive Lava Zone (900-1300 m)

From the deepest point of the lost river, look for a large cavern opening that leads down into the inactive lava zone. The water gets hotter and the terrain turns to dark volcanic rock. This is where the Seamoth reaches its 900 m limit, so you must switch to the Prawn Suit.

Requirements:

• Prawn Suit with depth module MK1 (400 m base upgraded to 1300 m).
• Drill arm for mining deposits.
• Grappling hook arm for navigation and escape.
• Cyclops parked nearby as a recharge and storage base.

Mine Kyanite deposits from the walls. Watch for the Sea Dragon Leviathan.

Step 3: Descend to the Active Lava Zone (1300-1700 m)

The active lava zone is the deepest accessible area in Subnautica 2. It contains molten lava lakes, the Primary Containment Facility, and the rarest resources. The Sea Dragon Leviathan is most active here, so move carefully and use rock pillars for cover.

Requirements:

• Prawn Suit with depth module MK2 (1700 m max).
• Hull reinforcement module to survive Sea Dragon attacks.
• Full health kits and a repair tool.
• Cyclops with thermal reactor module, parked in the inactive lava zone for recharging.

Use the grappling hook to swing across lava lakes and avoid direct contact with molten surfaces. Collect Kyanite and Ion Cubes, then retreat to the Cyclops to offload and recharge.

Safety Summary for the Deep Descent

• Never swim in the lava zones; always use the Prawn Suit.
• Listen for the Sea Dragon roar and keep terrain between you and it.
• Park the Cyclops at the inactive lava zone boundary and use it as a forward base.
• Carry beacons to mark your route back through the lost river.
